1. Information We Collect

When you use Rival, we collect:

• Account Information: Email address, username, and password (encrypted)
• Profile Information: Profile photo, training preferences
• Check-in Data: Photos you post, workout type, location (if you allow), captions
• Usage Data: When you open the app, features you use
• Device Information: Device type, operating system version

2. How We Use Your Information

We use your information to:

• Provide the Rival app and its features
• Show your check-ins to your circles and friends
• Calculate your streaks and competition points
• Send you notifications (if enabled)
• Improve the app experience

3. Information Sharing

We do not sell your personal information.

We share your information only:

• With your circles: Your check-ins are visible to members of your circles
• With your friends: Friends can see your profile and activity
• Service providers: We use Firebase (Google) for authentication, database, and storage
• Legal requirements: If required by law

4. Data Storage

Your data is stored securely using Firebase (Google Cloud Platform) with encryption in transit and at rest.

5. Your Rights

You can:

• Access your data through the app
• Delete your account and all associated data from Settings
• Update your profile information anytime
• Opt out of notifications in your device settings

6. Photos and Location

• Photos: Check-in photos are stored securely and only visible to your circles
• Location: Location is optional. If shared, only the general area is shown

7. Apple Health

When you connect Apple Health, Rival reads the following data, read-only:

• Workout type, duration, start and end times
• Distance covered during workouts
• Active energy burned (calories) during workouts
• Average heart rate during workouts
• The name of the data source (e.g. Apple Watch, Whoop, Garmin, Strava) so we can attribute the workout

Rival uses this data for two purposes only:

• To display workout details on your daily check-in posts so members of your circles can see the workout behind the photo.
• To rank you on Rival challenge competitions (Murph, Hyrox Sim, Mile, 5K, 10K, Half Marathon) and any challenge competitions created inside your friend circles. Best-time leaderboards are stored per challenge cohort.

This data is stored on your check-in document in our Firestore database as part of the post itself. It is not aggregated, profiled, or used for any other purpose.

What Rival does NOT do with Apple Health data:

• We do not share it with any third party.
• We do not use it for advertising or marketing.
• We do not sell it.
• Rival does not write to Apple Health (no data flows from Rival back into the Health app).
• We do not use it for training machine learning models.

Your control: You can disconnect Apple Health at any time from Profile → Settings inside Rival, or from iOS Settings → Privacy → Health → Rival. Disconnecting inside Rival stops the app from querying HealthKit. Revoking from iOS Settings additionally prevents the permission sheet from being shown again.

If you delete your Rival account, all check-in documents (including their Apple Health workout details) are deleted from our database as part of account deletion.

8. Children's Privacy

Rival is not intended for users under 13 years old. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy. We will notify you of significant changes through the app.
